A Huffington Post article from late 2019 references Mark Verdino MD, senior vice-president and chief of veterinary staff at North Shore Animal League America who uses CBD oil to settle his own anxious senior dog. “When I give him the CBD, he seems to just go to sleep… They seem less reactive to certain things.”

Doctor Verdino could not say conclusively whether it eased his dog’s pain, but that “they seem to be less reactive to low-level pain stimuli, for example arthritis and things like that, when they take the product.”

Pet CBD Oil is under-researched as it has been difficult for veterinary associations to get licenses to study the substance, but with more veterinarians advocating for CBD oil in recent years, a 2018 Cornell University study found that dogs with osteo-arthritis showed increased comfort and activity after the correct dose had been administered.

The idea behind this study is that pain and swelling are regulated by a receptor in the brain of both human and their pets – the vanilloid receptor. CBD oils target and block it from activating in order to send pain and swelling signals to the body, thereby reducing these symptoms.

The trial’s doggie subjects were monitored by a veterinarian and their owners did not report any side effects. This is interesting from the point of view that other, more routine treatment methods are often said to have adverse side-effects, particularly in geriatric patients with comorbidities such as kidney or gastrointestinal pathologies.

With the effective treatment of epilepsy in humans, an epilepsy pilot study was performed at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital and published in 2019. Sixteen dogs with treatment-resistant epilepsy were enrolled in the study.

All suffered multiple seizures in a month despite receiving standard anti-convulsant medications. They were either given a placebo or CBD. While a 50% seizure reduction was not established in the CBD group, a larger number of dogs in the CBD group showed a reduction in seizures compared to the placebo set.

Another, larger study on CBD’s affects on epilepsy in dogs is currently in the pipeline.
